USDA reports the smallest beef cow herd in seven years!

USDA released the bi-annual Cattle report today. This is a survey mainly of cow/calf producers. The numbers were all lower than the trade expectations. The headline number, All Cattle & Calves, was -2.0% from last year. This is the lowest total cattle herd, beef and dairy combined, in six years. But our focus is really on the beef breeding herd for this report. All of those numbers were under trade expectation. After last year's beef cow cull, the largest in 10 years, we are significantly drawing down numbers. Additionally, there is no sign of expansion, at all, in these numbers.
