Allendale, Inc. Releases Cattle Estimates

CHICAGO, IL. (January 16, 2023) – The following are our estimates for the upcoming 1/31 Cattle report.

The bi-annual Cattle report, known unofficially as Cattle Inventory, is primarily a survey of the base cow/calf producer. This report gives a complete breakdown of cattle in the U.S. as of January 1. The industry uses it to shed light on long term expansion or contraction changes.

This report is expected to confirm continued liquidation in the cow/calf sector. The US beef cow herd, as of January 1, has now posted four years of declining inventories. It is not only under the prior low in 2014. It is also at the level since 1962.

The US calf crop, beef plus dairy, has posted four years of declines and is now at its lowest level in seven years.
